Safety boundary

Helium is nonflammable. The hazards are still real.

Compressed helium can create pressure hazards and can displace oxygen in a poorly ventilated area. Cylinder condition, restraint, ventilation and correct equipment remain essential.

Handling stages

Three stages. One safety discipline.

Transport

  • Confirm the cylinder, markings, closure and package are fit for the planned mode and route.
  • Protect the valve and secure cylinders against movement, impact and damage.
  • Keep required labels and transport documents available and legible.
  • Do not transport a leaking, damaged or unauthorized cylinder.

Storage

  • Use a dry, protected and well-ventilated assigned storage area.
  • Secure cylinders upright where required and protect them from being struck or tampered with.
  • Keep away from excessive heat and conditions that may damage the container or label.
  • Separate and identify full, in-use, empty and quarantined cylinders.

Operation

  • Read the SDS and inspect the cylinder, valve and connection before use.
  • Use compatible, pressure-rated equipment and follow the approved connection sequence.
  • Check for leaks using the specified safe method; never improvise a repair.
  • Close the valve after use and isolate damaged or abnormal equipment.

Emergency: If a leak, damaged valve or suspected oxygen-deficient atmosphere is found, keep people away, follow the site emergency plan, contact trained emergency personnel or the gas supplier, and do not enter an unsafe area without the required controls.

Before-use check

Pause before opening the valve.

A short, repeatable check prevents damaged equipment or the wrong connection from entering service.

Read

Confirm the current SDS, cylinder identity and planned use.

Inspect

Look for damage, contamination, missing protection or abnormal condition.

Secure

Restrain the cylinder and confirm adequate ventilation around the work area.

Connect

Fit only compatible, rated equipment using the approved procedure.

Verify

Open as instructed, check for leakage and stop if anything is abnormal.
